Jump to RecipeWhat is French toast?
Classic French toast is made by soaking thick slices of bread in a mixture of egg and milk and pan frying – often in butter. This breakfast treat is flavoured with sugar, cinnamon or other spices and served with buttter and maple syrup.
How to make French toast without eggs or dairy
For people with food allergies, many of the ingredients can mean French toast is not an option. If you have a milk, egg or wheat allergy, you’ll be happy to know that it’s actually very easy to make an allergy friendly and vegan French toast. And you won’t need fancy ingredients.

This recipe uses allergy-friendly substitutes including:
- aquafaba (liquid from canned chick peas) in place of eggs. This is an easy way to substitute eggs, using 3 Tablespoons of liquid to replace one egg.
- dairy free, plant based milk – we use oat milk to suit our family’s allergies, but you can use whichever plant based milk you prefer that suits your allergies (including if you need gluten free cookies).
- dairy free/vegan ‘butter’ or spread for frying.
- wheat free/gluten free bread if needed.
Vegan French toast ingredients
To make dairy and egg free French toast you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup aquafaba (liquid from canned chick peas)
- 1/2 cup non-dairy milk (eg oat or soy – choose gluten free if required)
- 2 Tablespoons white granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 – 8 slices of thick bread (gluten free if required – sourdough works well)
- dairy free spread to grease the pan
- Fruit (eg strawberries, bananas) and maple syrup to serve

Make sure to use thick slices of bread so that the French toast hodls together during cooking and turning.
Method
Place aquafaba, non-dairy milk, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Whisk ingredients together well until the mixture is frothy. Transfer the mixture to a shallow dish.
Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat and melt some non-dairy spread or vegan butter in the pan to grease.
Using tongs, dip a slice of bread into the dish of aquafaba and non-dairy milk mixture to soak the bread. Hold the bread over the dish and allow any excess liquid to drip off.

Place the slice of bread in the heated pan and cook until the bread starts to steam and the underside is golden brown. Flip the bread over and cook the other side until it is a golden brown colour too.
Serve slices of French toast with fresh strawberries or banana slices and maple syrup.
This recipe makes 6 to 8 slices of French toast, depending on the size of your bread.

Tip: Cook two slices of French toast at a time and transfer to a tray to keep warm in the oven while you cook the next batch, until you have enough to serve everyone.
